I just signed up to participate in the May Grocery Challenge over at Give Me Back My Five Bucks. My goal for May is $125, about $75 less than I usually spend. I'm counting groceries as all food items as well as paper products, cleaning stuff, and hygiene stuff.
In order to accomplish this, I'm trying these tactics:
- I joined CouponMom.com. I plan to use a lot more coupons and rebates.
- My vegetable garden is starting to produce, so I'll be able to have fresh vegetables for almost free. I'm not going to count anything that I've already spent for seeds and seedlings in the grocery budget, but if I end up buying any more, I will count those expenses.
- I've started paying a lot more attention to getting freebie samples of things. Those help to defray grocery costs too.
- One of the biggest helps will be when I clean out my food cupboard, pantry shelves (there's currently not very much there), and refrigerator and freezer. Once I have a better handle on what I have in stock, I can make better menu plans. I hope to get this all done by the end of this weekend.
- Because I haven't done a very good job of tracking all my grocery expenses in the past, I'm going to dedicate my one zero-balance credit card to just groceries and gas.

Oh I wish I had access to CouponMom here... we barely ever get any coupons here :-(
Your garden is already starting to produce?!?! Wow, nothing's even in the ground here........ That'll help cut back on expenses for sure.
Good luck!
